In 1995 Perth’s newest and biggest ice rink opened at in Cockburn (Cockburn Ice Arena – CIA). Several Ice Hockey players helped in the construction and fit-out of the rink. Today, the Cockburn Ice Arena is located in Bibra Lake, with 2 sheets of ice and still presents with the best Ice in Western Australia.
Almost as soon as the rink opened, a group of players from the 3 existing clubs in WA (Wildcats, Flyers, and Ice Dogs) relocated to the Cockburn rink and began training. At that time, they had not chosen a name for the club. At a post training gathering the name Hawks was chosen.
The Hawks have now been competing in the Ice Hockey West Australian (IHWA) League since 1997. The Hawks have brought home championships in all age divisions from Peewees to Super League.
The Hawks have teams represented in all divisions. To qualify in a division, the player must be under the age limit as of December 31 of the current season.
- 11U (Atoms) – ages 11 and under, non-checking and mixed gender
- 14U (PeeWees) – aged 12 – 14, non Checking and mixed gender
- 17U (Midgets) – aged 15 – 17, checking and mixed gender
- Seniors – Non Checking (Adult) mixed gender
- Premier League (Adult) Checking male only
A player is to play in their age bracket, and it is determined on the year of birth only. This is for Juniors only, and you are a junior until the year turning 18.
